Barcelona ‘have already decided to sack’ Quique Setien after Champions League exit
Reports are claiming Quique Setien will be sacked following Barcelona’s 8-2 Champions League humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich, according to mirror.co.uk.
One report said Barca’s sporting director Eric Abidal and CEO Oscar Grau could also be replaced after the club’s humbling semi-final exit, but claimed president Josep Maria Bartomeu intended to stay.
The Champions League was the Catalan club’s last chance for silverware after a trophy-less season, and Setien was already under pressure going into the clash having only taken charge in January. But Lionel Messi and his teammates were knocked out in embarrassing fashion, suffering one of Barcelona’s worst ever defeats in Europe – and even conceding two goals to their own player, Philippe Coutinho, who is on loan at Bayern.
After the drubbing, Sky Sport journalist Fabrizio Romano took to Twitter to claim that the decision had already been made to sack Setien.
He tweeted: ” Barcelona have already decided to sack Quique Setién after the terrible defeat against Bayern Münich. He’ll not be the manager next season.”
Sky Sport Italia contributor Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that Setien is to “destined to leave”, with former Barca star Xavi and ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino among the names in the frame to replace him.
Di Marzio said the positions of Abidal and Grau also at risk, but that Bartomeu is not expected to resign.
Bartomeu was quoted saying: “It was a disaster. We already made some decisions and we will announce them in the coming days.”
Barcelona were well and truly put to the sword in Lisbon, with Bayern having raced into an incredible 4-1 lead by half-time. Thomas Muller gave Bayern the lead in the fourth minute.
Although Barca quickly equalised with an own goal from David Alaba, the Bundesliga champions replied by scoring three goals in the space of 10 minutes through Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry and another from Muller.
The Spaniards pulled one back early in the second half through Luis Suarez but Bayern quickly restored their three-goal lead thanks to Joshua Kimmich.
Robert Lewandowski added a sixth before Coutinho rubbed even more salt into Barca’s wounds by scoring a late double.
