The Kano State government on Monday removed Sanusi Muhammad II as the emir of Kano and replaced him Aminu Ado Bayero.
Sanusi’s removal as emir of Kano comes after months of soiled relationship between Governor Umar Ganduje and the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor.
Secretary to Kano State government, Usman Alhaji announced Sanusi’s removal on Monday at the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano. He said the removal was with immediate effect.
According to Alhaji, the state government took the decision to remove the Sanusi for allegedly consistently refusing to abide by instructions given to him.
The deposed emir was also accused of insubordination and outright disrespect to constituted authority in the state.
The Kano State government said the removal follows due consultation and in line with lay down rules.
At the council presided over by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Alhaji accused Sanusi of persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organised by the government without any lawful justification which amount to total insubordination.
“The removal of Sanusi was reached in order to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige of the Kano Emirate built over a thousand years ago,” Alhaji said.
Following Sanusi’s removal, Alhaji announced Aminu Ado Bayero as the new emir of Kano, a few hours later.
Announcing the new emir of Kano, Alhaji disclosed that the new appointment was in consonance with section 11 subsection 1 of deposition laws of 1999 as amended, which empowers Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to do so.
The SSG noted that the final choice of Aminu as new emir was based on the recommendation of Kano Kingmakers, who had earlier submitted a list of potential replacement of former emir Sanusi.
