Dennis Bergkamp is at the head of a consortium of footballing greats which aims to buy a Premier League club, according to The Mirror.
Along with the likes of Dirk Kuyt, Phillip Cocu, Ronald Koeman, and Henrik Larsson, they hope a club will become available in the next few months due to the financial strain of the coronavirus pandemic.
Dutch agent Rob Jansen, an executive at the £3.2billion Wasserman Media Group, is in charge of the business side of their ambitions, and says they are ‘in the waiting room.’
‘In this current crisis, the asking price of some clubs will be lowered,’ he said. ‘At the same time the internal struggles at these clubs will get bigger.’
Clubs have already lost a lot of money due to football being suspended, and it could get a lot worse if the season is not able to be completed.
Project Restart is an initiative hoping to get professional football back up and running again within the next couple of months.
Jansen also says the group were close to a deal for an undisclosed club recently, but were ‘beaten by a foreign investor.’
Newcastle United are in the middle of a £300million takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium, and more clubs could go up for sale if financial struggles continue.
Arsenal legend Bergkamp is said to want a hands-on role at any club that is bought, having been away from football since leaving his coaching job at Ajax in 2017.
Larsson, club hero at Celtic, is now manager of Helsingborgs, while former Liverpool-man Kuyt works in Feyenoord’s youth system.
Cocu is currently Derby County boss, while Koeman has been manager of the Dutch national team since 2018.
